Where are things going in the next 5 years? Mobile. We’ve been seeing the statistics go from some .05% to 16% and up on average in the last year. And now we are seeing jumps and leaps from month to month instead of steady incline. That means more people will need a mobile website. Our desktop site is mobile friendly but we felt the increase in mobile traffic meant we needed to offer a mobile version.
What is your audience looking for on a mobile site?
Simplicity for one. And buttons that are not tiny but finger sized.
Often people just want directions, a phone number and other contact information. In our case, those wanting directions is less frequent as we often meet our customers at their place of business. So directions are at the bottom of our mobile site and phone number at the top. But if you are a retail store or a doctor’s office, address and phone would be priority. And directions should click to a GPS map on your smartphone.
Tapping the number on our mobile site will call our main number. And if you go to who’s who, you’ll find our staff and their phone numbers.
If you login on your mobile, you will automatically to to the mobile site. Want to switch back? There is red link at the bottom of our main website to switch you back. (you can see it at the very bottom of this page)
People on mobile sites do not hang around long
That seems to be the nature of the mobile visitor. Usually mobile visitors are on a site for a specific reason and the visit length is far shorter than you’ll find on a desktop site. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just the nature of the beast.
It will be interesting to note how many mobile site owners will get calls as a result of their mobile website displaying a phone number that all you have to do is touch to call. And how many calls will not be made for directions given the ease of pressing the address button for directions.
